Using Adeka P-201 as a complete waterstop

Just a reminder - Adeka paste type P-201 may be used as a standalone waterstop if construction conditions preclude the use of a strip type waterstop.  A cured bead the same size as Adeka MC-2005T (20mm x 10mm) or MC-2010MN (20mm x 10mm) will function the same as the preformed strip product.  

Determining appropriate bead size is a balance between required hydrostatic head resistance, concrete coverage, potential for joint movement and sometimes cost effectiveness.  A bead size of approximately 1/4" X 1/2" will withstand a hydrostatic head pressure of about 50 feet and will require 3? or more of concrete coverage.  If your estimated hydrostatic head is within that range, any larger bead size would be overkill.   If you measure performance on hydrostatic head resistance, you can adjust bead size to accommodate any head pressure up to 150 feet.

The literature states, “Allow time for P-201 to cure before placing concrete.?  

Curing time depends on bead size, temperature and humidity.  Consider the bead cured when the bead cannot be deformed or displaced when pushing against it with your finger. You must have a minimum “skin cure? before placing concrete. A “skin cure? stage is when you press the bead and and no paste sticks to your finger.

BE AWARE:  Protect the bead of P-201 from prolonged exposure to water prior to placing second concrete.  However short periods of rain (showers) with periods of dry time will not damage the product or change its performance.

When considering durability, ability to withstand wet / dry cycles and ability to tolerate joint opening, the performance of a 1/4" X 1/2" bead of P-201 will exceed that of many bentonite based products.
